3:51 p.m.

It has been a heavy, low-light overcast day. It's surprising how "dark" it has been today. Feels like a late October or early November day, sky light-wise. I don't mind because it's cool. It's still damp out too. I like it because of the upcoming forecast for hot and I assume humid weather. I recorded a temp of 64 degrees outside in our backyard.

8:54 a.m.

It's an overcast, damp morning. It must have rained earlier today.

This morning's winds were very light, but the wind was still from the east for the seventh consecutive day. The east wind started last Saturday.

We go from comfortable daytime temps in the 50s and 60s, comfortable to me, to mid-summer warm to hot weather. Relatively speaking, the upcoming weather will feel hot. We have experienced mostly cool weather in April and May.

Good grief, Charlie Brown. High temps in the upper 80s are forecast Sunday through Thursday. I don't know beyond Thursday because that is as far as the forecast goes.

I'm wearing my wool sweater this morning. It's not cold. House temp is around 64 degrees. I have the computer room window up. In fact, I'll remove the sweater. Today or tomorrow morning might be the final time that I wear a wool sweater until this fall.

Man, it would have been nice to have a gradual introduction to hot summer weather, like highs in the 70s to around 80 and not a jump to the upper 80s.

What's worse than the forecast daytime high temps are the forecast low temps that seem to indicate quite humid conditions, since the forecast lows are to be in the upper 60s to 70 degrees. Our lows will be warmer than our recent daytime highs.

We're jumping into warm and humid July weather. Usually, the warm or hot weather in late May and the first half of June is accompanied by low humidity, making the warm weather not feel so bad.

I have not worn shorts since our trip to Orange Beach, Alabama back during the first week of March. We have popped a few days of 70 to 80 degree weather this spring in Toledo wear I could have worn shorts and sandals, but I chose not to.

Today and tomorrow will be nice and then it gets too warm. Barney is still wearing his winter coat of long hair. His haircut appointment is scheduled for June 3. He could have problems this week, unless I install a window AC unit.

this is sad, pathetic, and disgusting news for media. and then the media will whine about how it's tanking at the local level. how does the industry not see the correlation between their horrible decisions and the tanking of the business?

Discussion:
John Warner / @biblioracle: I'm glad the NYTimes exists. It can do things other papers can't, but it is not a substitute for local journalism. The Times “success” in a competitive media landscape makes it harder for the local papers to survive, not easier.
John Warner / @biblioracle: While circumstances have made life difficult for higher ed and journalism, we should also recognize that the institutions have been poorly managed. Newspapers embraced being financialized until they're now being drained of their lifeblood by private equity.
John Warner / @biblioracle: What @Paul_Bowers captures in his newsletter this week about the news business is equally true of higher education. “Competition” is not the route to sustainability for public goods. https://brutalsouth.substack.com/ ... https://twitter.com/...
John Warner / @biblioracle: The Times isn't to blame for the shifts in the media ecosystem and advertising markets, but its success is emblematic of the problem. There is no competing with the Times, WaPo and WSJ can survive, but even formerly great papers like ChiTrib, LATimes, Houston Chron, can't.
John Warner / @biblioracle: What the Atlantic has been doing has increased readership, but they're now cutting back on the people who produce the product that has increased readership. Tell me how that ends.
John Warner / @biblioracle: The parallels between journalism and higher ed are striking. A small number of elites increase wealth and prominence while other, particularly local options, are gradually starved of resources. NYT = Ivy League.
John Warner / @biblioracle: I believe that we need institutions like newspapers and universities, that the institutions themselves are important, but we may already be past the point where they can be saved. If that's the case, the next move is to preserve the underlying values they're supposed to represent
John Warner / @biblioracle: What has happened to the frontline laborers in journalism is identical to what's happened to instructional (primarily contingent) faculty in higher ed. They have been made precarious as the public good has been financialized. https://www.insidehighered.com/ ...
John Warner / @biblioracle: A timely journalism example of the difficulty of creating sustainable institutions. Readership is up, but revenue is down. https://twitter.com/...
