11:32 a.m.

It's March 9 already. Yesterday, our time sprung forward to Eastern Daylight Time.

Barney and I walked this morning from 9:45 a.m. to 10:24 a.m. The sky was mostly sunny with some cirrus clouds. It was a little breezy and at times, windy. Temps were already in the 50s. I think temps may have remained around 50 all night. Temps were in the 60s yesterday with a sunny sky and brisk southwest winds. Currently, the wind is howling at times.

This morning, an AMRO sang near our backyard.

For the next seven days, it appears that our weather will be on the mild side with high temps in the 40s and 50s and low temps staying above freezing. Above normal temps for the second week of March.

Donald Trump continues to downplay the threat of coronavirus, claiming the media and Democratic Party is trying to 'inflame' the situation in the U.S.
'The Fake News Media and their partner, the Democrat Party, is doing everything ... to inflame the CoronaVirus situation,' the president tweeted Monday
He also insisted that the massive market drop Monday morning is actually 'good for the consumer' because prices are lower for gasoline
His claim comes as the death toll in the U.S. reached 22 Monday
Global and the U.S. stock markets also continue to plummet over the fast-spreading virus and concerns over Saudi Arabia launching a price war on oil
Trump, the first to tout market gains under his administration, has not address the market impact of coronavirus
The Dow dropped nearly 7 per cent on Monday

Global markets opened with big losses Monday morning as the economy saw its worst day in more than 10 years.

Trump continued to downplay the threat, citing that more people died from the flu last year, and insisting life and the economy will 'go on' even over the escalation in coronavirus outbreak.

'So last year 37,000 Americans died from the common Flu. It averages between 27,000 and 70,000 per year,' Trump cited in a tweet.

'Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on,' he insisted. 'At this moment there are 546 confirmed cases of CoronaVirus, with 22 deaths. Think about that!'

Trump claims that media outlets are working with Democrats to make the coronavirus outbreak seem worse than it is.

Over a week ago, I thought that the "experts" said that Sanders would lock up the nomination, delegate-wise, on Super Tuesday, which occurred last week. And now it appears that Biden will take the nomination easily, according to the experts.

Global Markets in Turmoil as Oil Plunges

Washington Post: Live updates: Panic grips world markets as coronavirus fear unleashes oil-price war

Travis Gettys / Raw Story: ‘There is genuine panic’: Fears of global financial meltdown as human toll of coronavirus grows

I assume that it's good news for anti-fossil fuel people and climate-concerned environmentalists that the price of oil is dropping. Does it mean that demand for oil has dropped, or is this bad news because if the price of gasoline drops significantly, then people will drive more, consuming more fossil fuel.

Twitter, one of the worst technological inventions for humanity.

Twitter applied its “manipulated media” label for the first time, after a clipped video of Joe Biden was tweeted by a White House official, retweeted by Trump

https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2020/03/08/twitter-flags-video-retweeted-by-president-trump-manipulated-media/

Jessica Bursztynsky / CNBC:30 minutes ago
Facebook now has a “partly false information” label on the video of Joe Biden posted by White House staff and shared by Trump, following fact checkers' input

For this political "news" crapola, the problems are not with Facebook, Twitter, nor the manipulators. The problem belongs to humanity, which, for some moronic reason, chooses to obtain "news" from the social media silos that are advertising surveillance networks.

Bernie Sanders' claim that the mainstream media represents the affluents' interests has merit and is distinct from Trump's attempts to coerce and control

Problems faced by local news in the Catskills, like competition with new lifestyle pubs and social media over ad dollars, are amplified by rural economic issues

https://therivernewsroom.com/2020/03/01/local-news-decline-catskill-mountain-news/

Isn't it possible that citizens prefer to read about "lifestyle" interests instead of reading about city council meetings, school board meetings, zoning issues, and local political shenanigans?

From the attached Mediagazer discussion:

@lissaharris: I've been having a bunch of great conversations about this. Mulling over the idea of some sort of Catskills-region news industry group to talk shop and strategy. A Slack? A meetup? (I know y'all aren't all on Slack - or Twitter, ha! - but come on, it's 2020.) https://twitter.com/...

What's wrong with an email newsletter or if a discussion is needed, an email listserv? More people have an email address than a Twitter account or a Slack account.

If @lissaharris wants to host a discussion, why not recommend a Facebook Group? Come on, it's 2020. More people use Facebook than Twitter or Slack.

If the intention is to chat with only journalists and info-nerds and geeks, then Twitter or Slack makes sense.

But if the goal is to chat with a general audience, the people who would consume the media, then a Facebook Group is the superior choice.

@lissaharris: The drying up of local news is a national conversation, and that's good and proper. But if local matters - and it does! - then it also matters how local news ecosystems are different from one another.

A national conversation among whom? Journalists and info-nerds only or everyone? If the latter, then, again, using email or a Facebook Group makes more sense than Twitter and Slack. My friends and family use Facebook more than Twitter and Slack, and it's likely that most of my friends and family members do not use Twitter and Slack at all.

My wife "loves" the heavily moderated private Facebook Groups that she belongs to. The Group owners have a near zero tolerance for off-topic comments and abusive comments. Users who violate the Groups' posting guidelines are banned immediately. No warnings. No second chances. One chance and that's it, and my wife enjoys that type of moderation. These Group owners manage their communities with a heavier hand than how I managed Toledo Talk.

@lissaharris: How do we fix local news in a poor rural place? In my place, where I still live? I don't know. I spent seven years trying, with the @watershedpost. I am so deeply here for the part where we have a better and more locally-informed conversation about where to go next.

To discuss the future of local news, why should people use silos that @lissaharris prefers over the silo that most people prefer to use? If she wants to reach the masses, then, sorry to say, she needs to be on Facebook or use something built around email.

@lissaharris: Hey, news Twitter. I know it's a big day. I'm here to holler about little stuff. Specifically, the death of my hometown newspaper, and what a news desert looks like in the heart of a deeply beloved rural paradise. I wrote some stuff about it. https://therivernewsroom.com/ ...

News Twitter? Why is she preaching only to News Twitter? What will News Twitter do?

She should be directing her thoughts at the people who live in the Catskills. How is that accomplished? Maybe joining Catskills-related Facebook Groups and Reddit Subreddits, if those community "sites" exist.

Maybe she should share her thoughts with as many local religious organizations as possible with the hope that those orgs will share her thoughts with the people who attend those orgs. The many different kinds of religious orgs have an interest in creating better communities. This sharing could occur digitally and/or via paper. The orgs might maintain weekly or monthly email newsletters, and the orgs could share the link to Lissa's thought. Maybe printed copies could exist within the orgs for people to take.

She could targer other local orgs, non-profits, and charities, which might help share Lissa's thoughts with members and donors, via printed copies of Lissa's essay and via a link shared in email newsletters.

All of those orgs could share Lissa's thoughts on their respective Facebook pages. Talking to News Twitter seems like a dumb way to solve a local problem. It seems to make more sense to talk directly to local orgs that can share Lissa's essay with the orgs' followers.

I know that the Catskills is a big area, but Lissa needs to spend more time sharing her essay by pounding the pavement. Maybe talk with local business owners, who might share Lissa's essay on their Facebook Pages and/or in their email newsletters.

It would be good if followers of orgs and businesses shared Lissa's essay too. Make it go viral locally or regionally.

@lissaharris: Local news is ecology. We are watching ecological collapse — hoping to save what we can, and unsure what forms of life we will be able to reintroduce into the habitat if it deteriorates far enough. This right here is my hill to die on:

Well, if saving local journalism is a hill to die on, then evangelizing at the local level makes more sense than broadcasting to News Twitter.

... congressmen aren't elected by voters, they're elected by contributors ...

That probably applies to presidents too.

Hilarious. Yeah, Biden would be great for the U.S. [eyeroll]. Of course, Biden would have zero involvement with politics if he becomes president. Biden will be the Manchurian Candidate, a puppet, a figurehead. The real decisions will be made by the hacks that invade the White House.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nambassa

Nambassa was a series of hippie-conceived festivals held between 1976 and 1981 on large farms around Waihi and Waikino in New Zealand. They were music, arts and alternatives festivals that focused on peace, love, and an environmentally friendly lifestyle. In addition to popular entertainment, they featured workshops and displays advocating holistic health issues, alternative medicine, clean and sustainable energy, and unadulterated foods.

The New Zealand hippie movement was part of an international phenomenon in the 1960s and 1970s in the Western world, heralding a new artistic culture of music, freedom and social revolution where millions of young people across the globe were reacting against old world antecedents and embracing a new hippie ethos. Specifically New Zealand's subculture had its foundations in the peace and anti-nuclear activism of the 1960s where hippies were actively trying to stop New Zealand's involvement in the Vietnam war and to prevent the French from testing nuclear weapons at Mururoa atoll in French Polynesia in the Pacific Islands.

The January 1979 three-day music and alternatives festival, held over Auckland anniversary weekend, attracted over 75,000 patrons making it the largest arts, multiple cultural and popular music event of its type in the world.
