6:47 p.m.

Barney and I walked from 5:52 p.m. to 6:34 p.m. It was scenic dusk walk with the snow cover and the crisp, winter sunset colors. Some scattered low clouds and some scattered high cloudiness existed. Once the sun was below the horizon, the pastel colors dominated the sky with dark blue-grey colors on the scattered low clouds. Some high clouds contained purple-pinkish colors.

31.7 inches of snow in Watertown, 40 in Carthage, blizzard warning cancelled, lake effect snow warning issued

https://www.wwnytv.com/2020/02/28/blizzard-warning-cancelled-lake-effect-snow-warning-issued/

The National Weather Service has cancelled the blizzard warning and has instead issued a lake effect snow warning.

The lake effect snow warning is in effect in Jefferson, Lewis and Oswego counties until 4 a.m. Saturday.

According to the NWS, 31.7 inches of snow fell in Watertown as of 3 p.m. Friday. In Carthage, a whopping 40 inches of snow was reported as of 4:40 p.m. Friday.

Additional snow accumulations of 6 to 11 inches are possible in the most persistent snowfall areas. Wind gusts are forecast to be as high as 30 miles per hour.

Meanwhile in southeastern St. Lawrence County, the lake effect snow warning is in effect until 4 p.m. The NWS says to expect snow accumulations of 10 to 20 inches along and south of State Route 3, and 5 to 10 inches northward. Winds are gusting as high as 35 miles per hour.

As of late Friday morning, the NWS reported 22 inches of snow had fallen in Star Lake and 20 inches in Wanakena.

The amount of snow the north country has seen since the blizzard started is still being calculated, but the NWS reported the following measurements in Lewis County as of early Friday morning:

A great deal of additional snow has fallen since the time those numbers were recorded. The additional accumulation will be calculated early Saturday morning.

https://www.wwnytv.com/2020/02/28/watertown-dpw-vehicles-got-stuck-pretty-much-every-city-street/

And it was a hectic day for the DPW, which tried to keep up with a lot of snow falling in a short period of time.

"They said it was at a rate for two and a half inches per hour," said Shawn Dick, DPW street and sewer supervisor. "That amount of snow in a short amount of time, there's not much you can do no matter what you got out there."

According to the National Weather Service, 31.7 inches of snow had fallen in Watertown as of 3 p.m. Friday.

https://www.wwnytv.com/2020/02/28/some-say-blizzard-was-among-worst-storms-theyve-ever-seen/

In Lewis County, people in Copenhagen were busy unburying themselves after being hit by the blizzard. Some are saying this storm was on par with some of the worst they’ve seen.

Some people we spoke to told us they've been working non-stop since early Friday morning to try to clear up all the snow Copenhagen has received.

And there's still work to do.

One person says this storm is almost as bad as a blizzard that hit the area more than 40 years ago.

"I would have to say, it's just about like it was for the blizzard of '77," said Duane St. Louis.

Groff says this storm is one of the worst he can remember.

"Definitely the biggest of the year that's for sure and one of the top five in my memory," he said.

Some people say the snow banks forming on the side of driveways are a problem because it becomes difficult to see when you're backing out.

"We've got banks that are five, over five foot high. You won't see a car coming down through until it's right on you," said St. Louis.

4:06 p.m.

We have experienced more sunshine than cloudiness this afternoon. Strong wind gusts occur occasionally.

New Yorkers in the Tug Hill Plateau should expect to see between three and four feet of snow by Sunday. Outside of the Tug Hill, surrounding areas are forecast to see more than a foot, with totals continuing to decrease further away. Areas along the I-90 corridor in the Western New York, Finger Lakes and Central New York are forecasted to experience between three to six inches of snow. Totals will decrease moving south, except in the southern portion of Western New York, where lake effect snow could drop up to two feet of snow. The Capital, Mid-Hudson, and portions of the Mohawk Valley will most likely experience a mix of rain and snow.

10:11 a.m.

Barney and I walked around our neighborhood from 8:25 a.m. to 9:29 a.m. That's one of our longest walks this season. The weather and scenery were enjoyable. Temps were in the upper teens to around 20. Wind was light to at times moderate. The sky was clear. With the sun relatively high now in late February and with the few inches of snow cover, the landscape was bright. Of course, shadows produced blue colors on the snow.

The snow depth contracted. Due to yesterday's partly sunny weather causing some melting, the wind blowing the fluffy snow, and this morning's cold, the snow depth shrunk.

Some scattered clouds exist now, blocking the sun occasionally. Temps are forecast to remain below freezing through Sunday morning, and then mild weather is forecast for a few days.

Yesterday morning when I walked Barney to the groomers, some light snow fell for a short period, and that was the only snow that I saw yesterday. The straggler lake effect snow squalls stayed north of us, due to the wind angle.

Media Covering Coronavirus to ‘Bring Down the President,’ Mulvaney Claims

The media is in the fear-mongering business. The media does not intend to inform people with the truth. The media wants to create clickbait stories that generate pages views, which leads to mor ad impressions, which means revenue for the media.

Newsrooms, like WaPo and ABC News, must stop giving in to online trolls using “fairness” and “impartiality” to bait them into failing to protect their reporters

https://www.theverge.com/2020/2/28/21156681/abc-washington-post-online-trolls-reporters-policy-suspension

In January, The Washington Post suspended reporter Felicia Sonmez for the violation of sharing accurate reporting following Kobe Bryant’s death regarding sexual assault allegations made against him. Sonmez then received a deluge of abuse and threats from an online mob of Bryant supporters. Instead of standing by her in the wake of mob abuse, Washington Post executive editor Marty Baron told her that she was hurting the institution, and she was placed on administrative leave.

Fortunately, Sonmez was reinstated, and the Post confirmed that she had not violated the newspaper’s policies. But the damage was done. Reporters in the Post’s newsroom and elsewhere were left to wonder if, while having their home addresses posted online by an angry mob, they would be reprimanded by their bosses instead of given support.

Then, this week, ABC News suspended veteran journalist David Wright after he was recorded identifying himself as a “socialist” and offering mild criticism of his parent company. The footage was captured by Project Veritas: a right-wing sting operation that attempts to discredit media outlets.

“Any action that damages our reputation for fairness and impartiality or gives the appearance of compromising it harms ABC News and the individuals involved,” a spokesperson said. ABC plans to reassign him away from political coverage when he returns from his suspension. It’s not clear how Wright damaged ABC’s reputation for fairness or impartiality — perhaps his real sin was insulting parent company Disney.

If the only thing needed to damage a journalist today is to leak a video in which they admit fundamentally true and transparent things about the tensions in any newsroom or say they’re a socialist, we’re going to lose a lot of good reporters. And if the largest, oldest, and most well-financed editorial organizations in the world can’t handle a reporter’s substantially fair and accurate tweets about an NBA star, how are they going to handle even more sophisticated campaigns against their people?

Layoffs are under way at newspapers owned by Gannett; one employee has tracked at least 24 newsroom staffers affected, with 40 pressroom positions cut

Discussion:
Joshua Benton / Nieman Lab: On a rough day for American newspapers, investors aren't buying Gannett's story and Tribune's not done chopping
American Press Institute: Need to Know: Feb. 28, 2020 — OFF THE TOP — You might …
@pbnewsguild: Layoffs within The Palm Beach Post newsroom have been announced, more than a week after 85% of us announced support for a union. Nine of our friends and colleagues have been affected. We are deeply troubled by today's actions, which will undoubtedly impact the community.
Sara Guaglione / MediaPost: 2 Top Editors To Exit ‘Chicago Tribune’
David Fahrenthold / @fahrenthold: Terrible news at a paper that's an invaluable resource (especially for me, since they cover the heck out of Palm Beach and Mar-a-Lago)! https://twitter.com/...
Ryan DiPentima / @ryan_dipentima: I was one of the nine. Disappointed to say the least, but I'm so grateful to have interacted with and covered so many great people across this county over the last four years. On to the next chapter... https://twitter.com/...
Red Butler / @marilynlynch: I'm a little distracted by doing the job of six people and the nearly three percent in raises I've gotten over the past checks notes decade. https://twitter.com/...
@spj_tweets: Yesterday was “a rough day to root for American newspapers. In particular, for the country's No. 1 and No. 3 newspaper chains,” @jbenton writes as he explains the recent developments with @Gannett and @tribpub. https://www.niemanlab.org/...
Five Reasons / @5reasonssports: I loved working for that paper. Will always say that during the 90s it was the best in the market. Look at everyone who was there. It's been gutted. — Ethan https://twitter.com/...
Jennifer Bowman / @jenn_bowman: Were employees more distracted during last year's layoffs? Or the '17 layoffs? How about in '16, when Gannett decided my paper needs zero local news editors? Please. These employees have gotten pretty good at putting out a paper amid all the “distraction.” It isn't by choice. https://twitter.com/...
Travis Dorman / @travdorman: Today the CEO of Gannett said the company missed its goals due to “employee distraction.” This is false, and everyone knows it. Our newsroom is badly understaffed, but we've been doing the best we can with the least we've had. These words don't help https://www.niemanlab.org/...
Katie Kull / @katiekull1: I was absolutely gutted when I read that. I've been working my butt off for my community. Where have these people been? In closed door meetings trying to make excuses to shareholders about why this merger isn't going well. https://twitter.com/...
@apantazi: Once again, Gannett has shown it doesn't care about the role journalists play in democracy. Today, across the country, the company is laying off hard-working journalists critical to their communities. I'm tracking the layoffs here: https://docs.google.com/... https://twitter.com/...
Steve Yelvington / @yelvington: Of course pressrooms are being shuttered. One printing plant with modern equipment can print six shrunken dailies with a quarter the staff that was required for one a couple of decades ago. It does require abandoning the pretense that readers discover the news in print. https://twitter.com/...
@paul_bowers: Following news about the news business means watching something I loved slowly die. I've been watching this happen since I was a teenager stringing for the local paper, and it never gets better. https://twitter.com/...
Arizona Republic Guild / @azrepublicguild: We are troubled to see that Gannett is once again laying off people across the country, following cuts in December. We stand in solidarity with other newsrooms. These cuts are devastating for individuals and for the communities that they cover. https://twitter.com/...
Patt Morrison / @pattmlatimes: FYI the Post has kicked ass with its Trump/Mar-a-Lago coverage. https://twitter.com/...
Matt Dempsey / @mizzousundevil: Another day where I reach out to friends at news outlets across the country and ask: Are you safe? Then wait anxiously hoping to hear they didn't get laid off. https://twitter.com/...
@sgfnewsguild: Gutting newsrooms and slashing staff isn't the way to make a viable business. Investment in a quality product is the only way local journalism will survive. We stand with our colleagues across the network, and we hope Gannett will reconsider these harmful decisions. https://twitter.com/...
@oneheraldguild: Today our hearts are with our colleagues at the @PBNewsGuild, where layoffs were announced shortly after most employees announced support for a union. OHG is here for you. 💙💙💙 https://twitter.com/...
@mcallguild: The company names are interchangeable — the epidemic is the same. Cuts made to staff mean less news is covered. Fewer communities then have coverage, which threatens our democracy. Meanwhile the fat cats get fatter. https://twitter.com/...
@os_guild: Gannett just announced layoffs affecting journalists nationwide, including several Florida newsrooms. We stand in solidarity with all those affected, especially our neighbors @swflnewsguild, @PBNewsGuild, @TimesUnionGuild, @dbnewsjournal, @TCPalm and @staugrecord. #SaveLocalNews https://twitter.com/...
Will Brown / @wwbrown19: Layoffs have, unfortunately, struck the St. Augustine Record— again. Those who have left The Record will be missed.
Tom Sofield / @buxmontnews: Hours after Gannett said they plan to finish cutting $60 million in expenses by the end of March, layoffs across the country started. Recently, Gannett announced they're closing their Falls Twp. plant: https://levittownnow.com/... https://twitter.com/...
Charles Ornstein / @charlesornstein: When the GateHouse-Gannett deal was announced, the value of the deal was $1.4B. By the time it was finalized, it shrank to $1.1B. Today, the market says Gannett is worth only $591 million. https://www.niemanlab.org/... via @NiemanLab @jbenton
Gregory Korte / @gregorykorte: Gannett's CEO blames decline in revenues “in part to the employee distraction caused by the acquisition and the announcement of our synergy target.” (via @jbenton) https://www.niemanlab.org/...
Joshua Benton / @jbenton: No. 3: @tribpub, which today decided its flagship newspaper no longer needed a publisher and that being its editor-in-chief could be something an existing exec could do on the side https://www.niemanlab.org/...
Joshua Benton / @jbenton: I wrote about today's double-barreled bad news for newspapers: — @Gannett's underwhelming numbers, supporting Wall Street critics who don't believe in its turnaround story — @chicagotribune ousting its editor-in-chief/publisher and managing ed/content https://www.niemanlab.org/...
Joshua Benton / @jbenton: @Gannett @chicagotribune One highlight from @Gannett's earnings call: CEO Mike Reed said last quarter's earnings decline “was attributable in part to the employee distraction caused by the acquisition and the announcement of our synergy target.” https://www.niemanlab.org/...
Peter Lattman / @peterlattman: Gannett's stock price getting pummeled; it closed today below $5 a share. This is the country's largest newspaper chain — 261 titles, including USA Today. Its market value is $592M, or 1/10th the NYT's. Earnings out tomorrow AM.

Gee, I'm shocked that national political journalists are failing at their jobs.

As with Trump in 2016, mainstream media is dismissing Sanders, when their job is to report on voters' choices, not to elevate candidates they think should win

The bulk of the national political US journalists are affiliated with the national democrat party establishment.

Trump in 2016 and Sanders in 2016 and 2020 show the declining influence that media has over the citizenry, which is wonderful because the media should not be in the business of convincing people to vote how the media orgs desire.

The internet, web, and even social media have destroyed the media's information gatekeeper status.

Discussion:
Allyssa Pollard / @allyssapollard: “There's the problem... that we're seen as less than fair, that we have our minds made up, that our allegiances are with the party or politics rather than our readers or, dare I say, aspiring to tell the truth.”
Allyssa Pollard / @allyssapollard: none of this is new or novel but can't be said enough. hardly anyone learned anything, or they don't care because they wish things weren't the way they in fact are. it's maddening!
Vincent Baby / @vb2b: “When people go to the polls and vote, decisively, for one candidate over the others, the job of the press is not to dismiss those people or speculate about their candidate's electability.” https://www.cjr.org/... via @cjr
Hamza Shaban / @hshaban: “Once again the echo chamber of the political reporting class is forcing it to miss a story as it materializes around them. So embedded are they in the status quo, and so determined to defend it, they are treating the rise of Sanders as a personal affront” https://www.cjr.org/...
Kyle Pope / @kylepope: A plea for political reporters as we head into an intense few days of primary coverage https://www.cjr.org/...
Allyssa Pollard / @allyssapollard: “So embedded are [the political reporting class] in the status quo, and so determined to defend it, that they are treating the rise of Sanders as a personal affront. And indeed it is. Theirs is precisely the worldview Sanders is raging against.” https://www.cjr.org/...
@cjr: “Our job is not to frame coverage based on who we think will win in November. We don't know. But that mindset also puts journalism on what I see as a dangerous path, one that will exacerbate the trust gap that has produced a crisis for our industry” https://www.cjr.org/...
Jay Rosen / @jayrosen_nyu: The editor of @CJR, the Columbia Journalism Review, which, I remind you, is a mainstream voice at an establishment instituition. https://www.cjr.org/... https://twitter.com/...
David Sirota / @davidsirota: “Despite Sanders' electoral wins - including a gargantuan victory in Nevada - the political press, the establishment press, is determined to dismiss his standing as the front-runner. It is embarrassing itself in the process.” https://www.cjr.org/...
