6:00 p.m.

Check that. Four flickers foraged on our backyard. Three were youngsters. All probed the ground, but two youngsters stayed close to the one adult. The one adult and two youngsters foraged near the south computer room window on the lawn between the nearest oval bed and the south foundation bed. The other youngster stayed along the west spirea bed.

5:52 p.m.

Three NOFL and three AMRO foraged on the ground along the east edge of the west spirea bed, and all six bird were near each other. For the flickers, I think one was an adult, and two were fledglings.

1:33 p.m.

Today has been mostly overcast with a light wind and comfy temps. We have rarely experienced a cloudy/overcast day like this, since mid-June.

Currently, three AMRO, one COGR, and one NOFL are foraging on our backyard. All three robins were youngsters. The flicker drilled for ants, insects, or grubs.

...brief minor flooding possible through the afternoon...

water levels from vermilion to toledo will fluctuate through the
afternoon as north to northeast winds push water toward the south
shore. the sloshing water will likely bring water levels up to
around 72 inches at toledo and near 70 inches at marblehead. so
locations around vermilion, port clinton and portions of maumee
bay could see minor flooding at times.

CNN roasted over debate production, format: 'A disservice to serious people'
https://thehill.com/homenews/media/455498-cnn-roasted-over-debate-production-format-a-disservice-to-serious-people

it's tv, cable tv. of course, it's going to be mentally insulting theatrics.

even sullivan opined.

"CNN's first debate, featuring divisive questions, frustratingly short response times, and outsize attention to fringe candidates, was a lost opportunity"

since when do the asshats in the media get to decide which candidates are "fringe"? bernie sanders is a fringe candidate by some people's definition of "fringe."

i thought that sullivan, a journalist, supported democracy. i thought that journalists liked facts. i thought that journalists did not want to see voters disenfranchised. let the voters decide. maybe lesser-known candidates will gain traction over the media's picks.

fringe? the newspaper industry at the local level is a fringe business.

sullivan sounds like a journalist who hates the idea that her industry is no longer the gakekeepers of information thanks to the web popularizing the internet.

@cjr: Too often, the moderators cut 2020 candidates off just as they were getting started, often with a binary “yes/no” follow-up question. Other lines of questioning were just silly:

i did not watch the "debate." of course, it's not a debate. these are candidate forums. real debates probably ended decades ago.

i did not see a text transcript of the forum. but if candidates had their answers cut short, then maybe the candidates would have more time to answer real questions if the journalists asked real questions.

Internal memo says LA Times is nowhere close to meeting its goal of doubling digital subs from 150K in 2018 to 300K in 2019, having only netted 13K this year

https://www.poynter.org/business-work/2019/trouble-at-the-los-angeles-times-memo-says-digital-subscriptions-way-below-goal/

the la times is not a national/international paper like the ny times and wapo.

but if a paper in a metro as large as l.a. struggles to add digital subscribers, then what chance exists for papers in smaller markets? it's all relative, of course.
