6:37 p.m.

Arrived back from our Shared Legacy CSA pickup a short while ago. Our Tuesday pickup is at the JCC in Sylvania.

Currently, five AMRO forage on our backyard. 3 youngsters, one adult female, and one adult male.

Also currently, a bat is resting atop a pile of old boards and good-sized branches (long logs) that rest on the ground near the west side of our house. I heard some high pitch squeaking coming through the west computer room window. I looked out and saw small, brown movement. At first, I thought that it was a mouse. Then I viewed the critter through my binoculars, and I saw that it was a bat, moving around a little. Hopefully, it's okay. That seems like an odd place to rest during the day. The bat body is larger than a mouse. It has a warm brown color, a little lighter than the color of brown oak leaves in the early winter. It has dark wings.

More media whining.

Black journalists, weighed down by the psychological and emotional toll of Trump's racism, push media to cover race in politics head-on

Trump is a troll. If journalists would stop feeding the troll, then they would be fine. If journalists would stop feeding the troll, then maybe they could provide a benefit to society.

London-based Future acquires online publisher and B2B newsletter specialist SmartBrief for $45M and up to $20M in deferred payments

Native Hawaiians comment on the national coverage of their resistance to telescope construction on Mauna Kea, which has downplayed Hawaiians' range of concerns

i'm not surprised that journalists are assholes even to other journalists. the national journalists believe that they are superior to local journalists.

Local reporter in Gilroy, CA, describes national news media swarming in to cover the aftermath of the Garlic Festival shooting, crowding out local press

Tom Namako / @tomnamako: It's a real conversation that needs to be had. It doesn't inspire trust in the national media when it swarms in, sticks cameras in people's faces, then leaves in days. There are ways to do this and to work together.

Robert E Eliason / @robt338: There are now 11 camera men and tripods with video cameras who have put themselves in front of the people here for the Gilroy vigil. Complete disrespect for the community. Shameful.

@stevelackmeyer: I remember all this on April 19. I remember the bullying by national media. I remember which hospital ignored local reporters but rolled out the red carpet for Oprah. And when they disappeared, local folks stuck with our town.

Drew Olanoff / @yoda: local news covers news FOR its community. as a service to the public. national news often covers these heinous crimes like events. local news should be deferred to always.

Max Michor / @maxmichor: I felt like the whole world was ending while I reported from the Strip on Oct 1 - at the same time I watched national media reporters treat it like any other story. My heart aches for every journalist who's watched tragedy scar their hometown firsthand.

@poynter: “I get sneered at because I'm local press, not the real thing.”

@jackischechner: Local news made me want to be a better reporter. National cable news made me want out of the business.

as I've said many times in the past, TV is the worst way to consume news. TV infotainmentcasters sensationalize the news. these theatre dropouts that masquerade as journalists are more interested in hyping gore.

Charlie Warzel / @cwarzel: only mass shooting i've covered was in Sutherland Springs, TX (pop ~600) in 2017 - it happened late am/early pm & by the evening's candlelight vigil there were more reporters jockeying w/ cameras than mourners. made me feel so gross & think nat'l news needs to rethink how 2 cover

Greg Wyshynski / @wyshynski: Powerful stuff from a local journalist. Saw this play out day after day at my weekly in Virginia, especially during things like the sniper hysteria in DC.

Dan Gillmor / @dangillmor: A local reporter reminds us (among other things in this piece) of what happens at major events as national press parachutes into town.

parachute journalism is not real journalism. it's exploitation for profit.

Elizabeth Hernandez / @ehernandez: Those who treat local journalists as less than are truly an embarrassment to this profession, but I take pride in knowing that my local news colleagues can and do run circles around them every single day. Solidarity to the local news ppl covering this tragedy & the next & next.
