Study: in 2018, US newspaper circulation reached its lowest level since 1940; digital ad revenue, which grew 23% YoY, has nearly tripled since 2011

https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2019/07/23/key-takeaways-state-of-the-news-media-2018/

By circulation, is the industry referring to print newspapers? If so, then it's due to the advancement of technological evolution. Print newspapers are being Darwined away.

About 2,100 newspapers have closed in the USA since 2004, almost all of which are weeklies, leaving ~7,000 still in publication, many with declining revenues

https://247wallst.com/media/2019/07/23/over-2000-american-newspapers-have-closed-in-past-15-years/

Almost all of the newspaper closures are weeklies, eh? That might be because most weeklies are free, and all of their revenue comes from ads. And this century, due to technological evolution, information consumers have been moving away from print publications and consuming more information digitally.

Holding a print newspaper seems strange to me. I'm fine with holding a printed book and a paper notebook to take notes with a pen or pencil. I still like some analog devices. A paper zine is fine with me too.

But broadsheet and tabloid formatted print newspapers feel too large and clunky to hold and read, compared to a small smartphone.

After Mississippi candidate for governor denied access to a reporter because she is a woman, other journalists say this is common on the political beat

https://www.cjr.org/united_states_project/robert-foster-mississippi-sexism-campaign-coverage.php

Again, the media will fail at its job to provide context and to investigate and report the real problem here, which is slimy politics where opponents look for gotcha moments, and it does not matter if the female is a reporter.

Mississippi’s Republican gubernatorial primary, just two weeks away, has been marked by a scandal over the ways female reporters are treated.

It's easy to disrespect journalists and media people when they write that way, which is disingenuous. That's intellectual dishonesty. The candidate is trying to win a race, apparently, in a political climate that features a lot of sleazeball political tactics.

Why don't the journalists focus on the sleazy side of political campaigning, instead of whining about an overly paranoid political candidate?

The dimwitted media people EVEN explain the real reason why the candidate does not want to be seen alone with a female reporter.

In two phone calls this week, Colton Robison, Foster’s campaign director, said a male colleague would need to accompany this reporter on an upcoming 15-hour campaign trip because they believed the optics of the candidate with a woman, even a working reporter, could be used in a smear campaign to insinuate an extramarital affair.

The smear campaign tactics is the REAL story here, but the journalists prove once again that they are not as interested in speaking truth to power, facts, and protecting democracy as they claim.

Foster’s decision—part of what is known as the “Billy Graham Rule” (and, to a lesser extent, the “Mike Pence Rule”)—attracted coverage from national news outlets, including The New York Times, People magazine, and USA Today.

Again, that's the story. Why don't the journalists expose the political sleazeball tactics?

Foster responded on Twitter to coverage from The Washington Post by accusing the paper of political bias and terming it “totally out of touch with America.” In other tweets, he shared news coverage and appended identical statements: “My wife and the State of Mississippi deserve a governor who doesn’t compromise their beliefs, and I’m sticking to my guns.”

The national media and its parachute journalism fails at understanding local issues. The national media needs to stick with covering the political sleaze in D.C.

Hah. This is clever political campaigning and maybe a bit sleazy.

Foster’s campaign has since embraced the incident, using the hashtag #MyTruckMyRules on social media and selling a t-shirt with the phrase on it. (The campaign also printed the phrase on bumper stickers which it pledged to send to donors who gave $5.) Last week, the Foster campaign released a new ad in which Heather Foster, Robert’s wife, speaks about his character and portrays the issue as a distraction.

This is an interesting idea that won't ever happen because media orgs don't have principles.

Rolling Stone Senior Writer Jamil Smith seized on a similar point and encouraged male journalists to refuse coverage of those campaigns that block female journalists:

Good luck with that idea. Political candidates at the local and state levels might PREFER not to have media coverage. The candidates can reach voters on their own terms through in-person gatherings, snail mail fliers, even phone calls still, and on the web, especially social media.

No surprise that the cjr.org article failed to discuss the sleazy political tactics that are used to take down opponents, instead of promoting their own candidates.

The media gets more useless everyday. The media is ceding relevance to the social media silos, but that's okay, since nearly every U.S. journalist lives on Twitter.

What a shock that TV infotainmentcasters fail at news reporting.

Poll: Biden the only Democrat beating Trump in Ohio

The results show Trump's popularity may have slipped in Ohio, a state he won by eight percentage points in 2016.

That would imply that Biden will be the next U.S. president, starting in January 2021.
