Scissor-grinder Cicada song ended around our home at 9:23 p.m. this evening. Weather-wise, the sky was clear.

Good lightning bug activity still occurring around our home.

I heard some cricket activity this evening too.

How about these temps:

Currently, five robins are foraging on our backyard. Four are youngsters, and the other is an adult female.

Three youngsters foraged on the bare ground that used to be the produce garden. I came inside about 15 minutes ago from doing yard work, including raking the surface of the former produce garden, which is still only a dirt rectangle. I'll plant grass seed and flowers soon. This area was a favorite sunning spot for the robins in July and maybe late June.

The fourth young AMRO foraged along the east edge of the west spirea flower bed where the hostas were in peak bloom two weeks ago, and now most of the blooms are gone.

The adult female AMRO foraged near the house and in the oval bed near the south side of the house.

I'm glad to see the robins still. I heard young robin chirps while I worked in the backyard for a couple hours.

The cat mint continues to produce small purple flowers. Interesting plant. I need to read more about it.

And while I was outside today, removing weeds, I found a small, blooming Black-eyed Susan. The first and only susan blooming this summer in our yard. I found some other susan plants that will hopefully bloom later.

No other native plants were blooming.

11:01 a.m.

Linne's Cicada is singing along the west side of our house. This is at least the third day this summer where I have heard a Linne's sing near the west side of our home.

7:43 a.m.

Sunny, cool morning. I sat outside for about 40 minutes, starting at 7:00 a.m. Barney joined me. I read news on my phone (my Blade web reading app), listened to NPR, and I drank tea.

In the 5:30 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. hour, the only bird song that I heard around our home was a Northern Cardinal. May have been a couple cardinals. No robin song.

Yesterday morning while walking Barney, I saw a few robins on the ground. I saw one robin in our backyard yesterday. Grackles were in on our front yard yesterday.

Last Saturday, several robins foraged in our yard still, but the robin numbers have dropped since. Even though robins exist in our neighborhood every winter, including last winter with our below zero temps, I enjoy the return of "our" robins in March. I enjoy their songs and chirps. I like their colors and size. Robins forage on the ground in the spring and summer. It's a good introductory bird for beginners to observe bird behavior. In recent weeks, I observed robins sunning themselves and anting in our backyard.

I'm guessing that "our" robins have left for the summer.

The night time insect song has not started yet. The cicada song is good, especially the Scissor-grinders. I have not heard a Dog Day Cicada yet. Occasionally, I hear the Linne's.

Temps were in the upper 50s, during the 5am and 6am hours.

The era of the celebrity magazine editor is widely assumed to be over, a casualty of shrinking media budgets and the decline of print.

Have print magazines been impacted by the loss of classified advertising? I don't think so.

Common sense thinking about the media industry. This time from a tech journalist/techie. This will irritate the shallow-thinking journalists.

https://om.co/2019/07/23/medias-blame-game/

Media companies keep playing a blame game, pointing to tech companies for their failures, but sales execs focused on short-term thinking should take the blame

https://mediagazer.com/190723/p21#a190723p21

https://twitter.com/lauraelizdavis/status/1153689508803559424

Yep. I too had this realization when working in legacy media. Did some unfortunate things happen to news orgs? Yes. But continuing to blame those forces instead of owning up to mistakes and stepping up to the challenge is an abdication of journalistic responsibility

https://twitter.com/chaddickerson/status/1153676401851142144

This post from @om is very much on point. I worked in media from 1993-2005 and found myself in many meetings like the one he describes. Traditional media cos have had 25 solid years to figure this all out.

https://twitter.com/arctictony/status/1153673998129123328

Om is on point here. We can point fingers at the platforms but the human factors involved in media's decline were visible long before they existed.

I'm surprised at the number of reactions attached to that Mediagazer link that agree with Om.

Finally. Blame the media orgs for their failures, instead of blaming others, unless technological evolution gets the blame.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and MSNBC have always had a complicated relationship. Sanders, a top-tier contender for the Democratic nomination, has long questioned the news media’s biases, while pundits have taken fresh shots at the Vermont senator this cycle. But officials in Sanders’ campaign contend that leading up to the 2020 election, the network is one of several cable news outlets directly contributing to a media climate where false claims go unchecked and requests for progressive voices on-air are frequently turned down.
