8:44 a.m.

Sunny, cool morning. The thermometer on our window fan in our upstairs bedroom read 62 degrees this morning. It read 79 degrees yesterday morning.

Today's forecast predicts a high temp in the low 80s. Tomorrow, about 90.

I walked Barney during the 7am hour. We walked west-northwest. I heard the following birds:

The Eastern Wood Pee-wee sand along Elsie near Bowen. I heard an EAWP sing in that area earlier this week, during a walk with Barney. It's common to hear an EAWP sing a couple blocks north of our house each summer.

It has also been a usual summer occurrence to hear a pee-wee sing along Woodmont, a few blocks south of our house, but that did not happen this year.

The pee-wee that has occasionally sang around our home this summer, including yesterday, is probably without a mate.

Today is the sixth consecutive morning that I have walked Barney. The House Wren that I heard singing this morning on our walk was the third HOWR that I heard sing this week.

The Song Sparrow sang along the Tiff Ditch stream, next to Elmhurst Elementary, which is a common spot to hear a Song Sparrow every year.

The Chipping Sparrow sang from the absolute top of a pine tree, located near the west side of Elmhurst Elementary. If the pine tree was a Christmas tree, then the Chipping Sparrow would have been the star.

Trump's “summit” was an airing of grievances in front of right-wing media figures, ending with Sebastian Gorka and a CNN analyst getting into a heated exchange

The discussion attached to the Mediagazer thread portrays the shitshow, starring Trump, other politicians, social media wackos, and the journalists. Good stuff. Delusion by all is on display here. Why do the journalists take this seriously?

Trump's words:

I said watch, I’m going to do this. And I said, “We recognize the Golan Heights as being part of Israel.” It was a big thing. I go, watch this: boom! I press it, and within two seconds: “We have breaking news.” John Roberts of Fox was over. He said, “We have breaking news. Please, break it up.” Doesn’t matter what they’re talking about, John does it. He breaks it up.

Now, that’s Twitter. That’s social media. I call Twitter a typewriter. That’s what I really call Twitter, because it goes onto Facebook automatically. And it goes onto Instagram, and it goes on to television—moreso Fox than it does CNN. If it’s something bad, they’ll put it on.

But we run out of here… Shadow-banned, a hundred percent. You look at what’s going on. You know, I could go… The blocking, just the basic blocking of what we want to get out. The fact that they don’t let them join. They don’t. There was…. There’s no doubt in my mind that I should have millions and millions…

Uhhh, okay.

https://werd.io/2019/trumps-social-media-summit-and-me

Recently, the white supremacist social network Gab decided to fork Mastodon, forcing that platform to release a strong statement decrying their values.

Open source projects can be forked. It's nothing new. It's a key value of open source software.

I believe this was the right move. If Known or Unlock were used for hate, I would do the same. Even though it's a full ten years since I left the Elgg project, I'm finding myself writing this blog post.

I don't understand. Don't create open source projects if you don't the software available to everyone. Create closed-source projects and sell the software to people who have been vetted.

I am deeply ashamed to have even a mild association with Minds.

Whoa. That sounds like phony guilt. Ben has NO association with Minds.

One of the dangers of building an open source networking platform is that anyone can use it for anything.

I wonder if Matt considered that when he built WordPress more than 15 years ago? Allegedly, WordPress powers more than 25 percent of all websites. It's statistically probably that at least a small percentage of those website could be considered inappropriate.

This is what I think of when I ponder open source.

More from Ben:

Elgg, an open source social networking platform made by my first startup, was used for all kinds of things ...

A few years ago, Bill Ottman reached out to me because he was using it as the basis of his new social network, Minds.

[Elgg] helped [Minds] get off the ground. Last year, Minds raised a $6M Series A round from one investor, the venture arm of Overstock.com.

... it's a full ten years since I left the Elgg project ...

I am deeply ashamed to have even a mild association with Minds

How does Ben have an association with Minds? I fail to see the connection. Did Ben work for Minds? Did Ben invest in Minds? Is Ben on the board of directors for Minds? Ben has no direct association with Minds, and it's absurd to claim otherwise.

I don't know what programming language was used to build Elgg, but I wonder if the people who invented that language feel the same way as Ben about Minds? Maybe those language developers regret creating a language that Ben used to create an open source project that could be used several years later to host content created by bad people. If we are being absurd, then the operating system creators need to feel deeply ashamed too.

Ben swerved off the rails with this idea:

I am also thinking hard about another set of principles: namely, the free software ideals that allowed Gab and Minds to adopt existing platforms in the first place.

While I accept that it runs counter to the stated principles of the free software movement, I believe we need a new set of licenses that explicitly forbid using software to facilitate hate or hate groups.

How in the hell is that enforced? That would require the 100 percent elimination of free, open source software. All code, even code created by amateurs, would need to be kept closed source. And if someone wanted to download the closed source code for possible usage, then a central, governing body would have to decide if the person wanting to download the code good human being. But who or what gets to define good human being?

Ben:

I don't want software I write to be used by these groups. Ever. For any reason. I don't want to help them even accidentally, ever again.

An easy solution exists for Ben's wish:

Ben should not use any open source software that is also used by people who he despises.

The saddest thing to me is that this is probably a controversial idea.

The idea is not controversial. It's stupid. The idea is not worth being sad over. I would love to read a Richard Stallman rebuttal.

Ben's idea is noble, but it's impractical in the open source world.

Ben concluded his post with this incoherent conflation of thoughts.

But I would much rather be a part of the anti-fascist software community than the libertarian free market community if the latter absolves itself of its culpability in the spread of white supremacy.

Shutdown the internet. That's a real helpful solution.

This is another bullying post by Ben. If every open source project leader and contributor do not accept blame for their projects being used by bad people, then according to Ben's warped thinking, those open source people support hate.

How many open source hardware and software projects around the world have been used by bad people? Yahoo, Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc. have built platforms that used open source projects, and those platforms host content, produced by bad people.

Linus Torvalds is the person probably most responsible for the spread of white supremacy if I follow Ben's "logic." Maybe Richard Stallman is even more responsible for the spread of white supremacy.

It's hilarious that Ben's post received a lot of likes from people who use Twitter, which is the cesspool of the internet. Twitter is a misinformation machine. Twitter spreads fear and rage. Twitter is used to harass people. Twitter hosts hate.

I cannot follow the logic here. How can a Twitter user like a web post that wants to eliminate open source software to prevent the spread of white supremacy when Twitter uses open source software and Twitter helps the spread of white supremacy.

Why do people use a silo, such as Twitter, that has profited from engagement by white supremacists? I would say that these other Twitter users are partly or wholly responsible for enabling the spread of white supremacy on Twitter.

Ben's post is one of the dumbest things that I have read in 2019, but what's even dumber than Ben's post are the reactions by Twitter users who liked the post. Twitter?

Twitter users contribute to the spread of hate. Their usage keeps the silo alive. If the concerned Twitter users truly cared, then they would delete their Twitter accounts. That would eventually wake up Twitter management and Wall Street.

And regarding Ben's post, nobody presented a detailed plan for how open source software can prevent others from using such software. All blather and no real action.

https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2019/07/statement-on-gabs-fork-of-mastodon/

Mastodon is completely opposed to Gab’s project and philosophy, which seeks to monetize and platform racist content while hiding behind the banner of free speech.

But Mastodon communities exist that host hate-filled content. Delete the open source project or switch to a plan that sells the Mastodon software, and the Mastodon leaders can determine who can buy their software.

Of course, the Mastodon software would have to be rewritten to remove all dependencies on open standards.

Ah, Ben feels ashamed that someone used Elgg to create a social network community. Ultimately, it's all Tim Berners-Lee's fault, since he invented the web application layer protocol. TBL created the early version of HTML.

We need a system that restricts who can use HTTP/HTTPS and HTML. I think that China already has such a system in place. We should look to China for inspiration on how to manage web content in the U.S.

The Mastodon community does not approve of their attempt to hijack our infrastructure and has already taken steps to isolate Gab and keep hate speech off the fediverse.

What??? "Our" infrastructure?? Mastodon's infrastructure is based upon open standards, such as ActivityPub.

Keep hate speech off the fediverse??? That's like someone claiming that he or she will keep hate speech off the internet. Fine. Shutdown the internet, which will shutdown the fediverse, and everybody wins.

Mastodon champions a free API ecosystem and as such all Mastodon apps are created and maintained by independent developers. However, Tusky (Android) and Toot! (iOS) have blacklisted Gab’s domains from their login screens. Gab users will not be able to use these apps to access or post from Gab.

That's cool, but nobody needs to install native apps from Google and Apple to access websites, provided that the native app called a web browser exists.

Site owners can create progressive web apps or JavaScript single page application web apps as alternatives, bypassing app stores. If web assembly catches on, then that's another option that bypasses the app stores.

Most servers in the fediverse are already blocking the Gab domains and we have done the same at mastodon.social.

That sounds funny. Servers in a fediverse blocking other servers. Is that really a fediverse?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse

The Fediverse (a portmanteau of "federation" and "universe") is the ensemble of federated (i.e. interconnected) servers that are used for web publishing (i.e. social networking, microblogging, blogging, or websites) and file hosting. On different servers (instances), users can create so called identities. These identities are able to communicate over the boundaries of the instances because the softwares running on the servers support one or more communication protocols which follow the open standard.

Whoa. That Wikipedia page is wrong with the line, "... which follow the open standard." It should be changed to: "... which follow the Mastodon infrastructure."

In addition to the isolation Gab can expect from the fediverse ...

That sounds strange: isolation from the fediverse? How can it be called a fediverse.

This is why these so-called alternatives, such as Mastodon and it's alleged fediverse, Scuttlebutt, DAT, IPFS are not as good and open as the open web.

The open web is the best idea. It's hard to have an open web without open source software that supports the web and the internet: Linux, TCP/IP, DNS, email, web servers, database servers, caching servers, programming languages, etc.
