It's a good thing that today was mostly cloudy to cloudy, otherwise the air temp could have hit 90 degrees all over. It's still rugged because of the humidity. Dew point temps in the low to mid 70s.

5:30 p.m.

A short while ago it me that 25 years ago today, I enjoyed a great bicycle ride with a large group of the Maumee Valley Wheelmen. Since it was a holiday, the group was larger than what normally occurred on the Saturday morning rides that I participated in. More two dozen rode on July 4, 1994. At one point, the speed was over 30 mph, like around 32 to 34, I don't remember exactly. I remember it going over 30 mph. But I did not get dropped that day. A lot of people got dropped, but I hung with the small, lead group.

4:01 p.m.

Sticky afternoon. Cloudy now. Some slow-moving, scattered showers exist. We have only received a few sprinkles at our home. A small shower has formed in the past few minutes, located less than one mile south of us. It might expand northward.

TOL reached 90 degrees-plus today, but the other reporting stations did not. That's 8 of the last 9 days that TOL has hit 90-degrees or higher.

10:42 a.m.

This morning is more uncomfortable than yesterday. The humidity is worse. This might be the highest dew point temps of the summer thus far. Mid-70s for dew points??? And of course no wind.

We received a fair amount of rain after Midnight via multiple, slow-moving thundershowers that drifted northward. This was the first rainfall since last Thursday.

TOL did not reach 90 yesterday. Yesterday's high was 88, which was two or three degrees warmer than most places around. Our streak of 90-degree days ended at seven.

Today might hit 90. Regardless, it will feel terrible with the dew point temps.

Independence Day: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 5pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 90. Heat index values as high as 96. South wind 3 to 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Oh, man that's the killer. No breeze. A 10 to 15 mph breeze would help tremendously. Dead air. That's why the thundershowers last night moved very little. That could occur today too. Hence the HWO.

And now Friday's forecast is warmer than what was predicted two days ago and yesterday. It had appeared that today would be the last 90-degree day for several days. Nope. Many the NWS seems to be struggling with short-term forecasts.

Friday's forecast high temp was the mid-80s, and now it's the low 90s. The forecast, however, still predicts cooler weather for Sunday and Monday with high temps in the low 80s. The key is forecast low temps in the 60s down to around 60.

When the low temps remain in the 70s, especially above 75, then that's rugged.

uh, yeah, okay. best of luck.
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/jul/02/europe-band-together-rival-facebook

instead of promoting another centralized silo, maybe the author should have promoted the social web or the social internet that has existed for decades. web, email, irc, etc.

it appeared that the author was promoting a government sponsored social media silo, or something that was partially funded/maintained by the government, which would be worse than facebook, twitter, snapchat, google.

Public broadcast companies could join up to create a platform that values diversity and privacy unlike super-platforms such as Facebook

Will this proposed service be sustained by ads? or if it's led by public broadcast orgs, does that mean donations, subscribers, and taxpayer money collected by the government would fund the silo?

i'm fine with donating to our public radio station. i'm fine with listening to public radio. but i would never use a social network or whatever that was led by npr.org because of npr's close ties to receiving tax money from the government.

the writer, unsurprisingly, overlooked the proper solution.

But I have a viable strategy to suggest: public broadcast companies in the UK and Europe, such as the BBC and Channel 4, France Télévisions, ARD and DW-TV in Germany, should join forces and resources and create a minimal public social media platform for their journalistic output, governed and funded collectively and available only in Europe and the UK– regardless of Brexit.

this is really wacky. the main point of this proposed idea is to promote the media even though the media have already enslaved themselves with big tech initiatives (how's that working) and the media already have or should have their own websites.

why not promote the open web: domain names, URLs, email, and feeds and feed readers?

The advantage of this platform over Facebook, for instance, is that its algorithms would be not only transparent, but designed to accommodate values most European countries uphold, such as diversity, solidarity and privacy, while flexible enough to privilege local languages, cultures and media products.

Huh? Since when does only Europe promote diversity, solidarity, and privacy?

The platform could be expanded to include other media organisations and provide other services. For instance, national newspapers could join the platform to distribute their output and participate in its governance.

That sounds like an aggregator or a giant feed reader tool.

The platform could also prepare the technical infrastructure (such as cloud services or a content delivery network) to encourage and facilitate European entrepreneurs to provide rival services to the US super-platforms.

Platform? I thought that it was established that platforms are also publishers.

As the media scholar José van Dijck and her co-authors lay out in their recent book The Platform Society, squeezed between two platform ecosystems of China and the US, it is “crucial for Europe to develop an encompassing strategy with regard to platform societies – both in economic market terms and in ideological-political terms”.

Platforms mean silos and silos can stifle creativity, individuality, diversity, and solidarity because platforms are not truly open. The open web is more open and diverse and free.

Platforms mean enslavement and entrapment. It's moronic to complain about other platforms while proposing a solution that is based upon another platform.

It's not a surprise that the Guardian is hosting this stupid idea.

hn comment:

Emperor G built a beautiful walled city, inviting everyone in, encouraging them to paint their houses whatever color they like. A year later, Big G banned blue houses. If you didn't like the rules, you were more than welcome to build your house outside the city and paint it whatever color you like.

Only most people don't leave - blue is just one color and they weren't very interested in it anyway. Besides, the city is so beautiful and provides for their every need. In the coming years, people who want to paint their house blue badly enough to leave paradise are heavily scrutinized and eventually considered outcasts.

Over the years, more and more colors are slowly banned, one by one. People start to notice and complain once their favorite color is outlawed. But decades have passed since Emperor G's generous invitation. Entire generations have lived, died, and raised children inside the city. No one knows how to navigate the wilderness anymore. And even if they could, why would they want to? Thorns and weeds have overgrown the wasteland; it's much safer to stay inside the city walls. Besides, it's cozy and we have everything we need in here.

Excerpts from another comment:

This is not a new concept. In 1859, John Stuart Mill argued in On Liberty that the tyranny of the majority and the de facto censorship that they can create is just as if not far more dangerous to actual liberty than government control.
