It's raining light to moderate again. We have received a decent amount of rain this afternoon. Temps continue to slowly drop. Today reminds a little of the "Tropical Storm Toledo" day back in June 2015. Today is not as windy nor as rainy as that incredible day in late June.

Special Weather Statement issued June 13 at 1:19PM EDT by NWS Cleveland

...Lake Erie Seiche Causing Lakeshore Flooding...
At 112 PM EDT, the Lake Erie water level at Toledo was 72 inches
above low water datum and at Marblehead was 65 inches above low
water datum. The seiche (slosh of the water back and forth in Lake
Erie) is forcing the water level to rise on the western end of the
lake. The rise in water level will cause some minor flooding for
the next few hours and then the water level will begin to fall.
Persons with interest along the lake shore should monitor the water
levels this afternoon and evening. Flooding of marinas and
property along the shore can be expected.

1:22 p.m.

Light rain occurred within the past 30 to 40 minutes, and the temp has dropped. I may have to close my computer room windows. It's getting chilly inside.

It's an overcast morning. Last evening's rain missed Toledo. A big rain area moved up from the south. A large area of light to moderate rain moved through Ottawa County. A smaller area of moderate rain moved through Fulton County. Lucas County remained mostly dry.

Rain is forecast for today with temps remaining in the low to mid 60s all day. Unseasonably cool. High temps are forecast to be in the 70s, starting tomorrow and lasting throughout the next six days thereafter. It's amazing stretch of comfy weather.

One of our hummingbird plants started blooming this week. The plants produce small, white flowers on stalks about two feet tall. We also have trumpet honeysuckle, which has been blooming since late May. It produces orange-red tubular flowers.

the national weather service in cleveland has issued a beach
hazards statement, which is in effect from 4 pm edt this
afternoon through late tonight.

precautionary/preparedness actions...

from a combination of wind and large waves including rip currents
and longshore currents. these swimming risks can create life-
threatening conditions even for good swimmers. follow the
instruction of local authorities or stay out of the water.

area forecast discussion
national weather service cleveland oh
730 am edt thu jun 13 2019

.synopsis...
an upper level trough will swing across the central and eastern
great lakes today with a cold front moving east across the area.
high pressure expand across the ohio valley for friday. the next low
will track along the southern fringes of the great lakes and leave a
nearly stationary boundary in our vicinity into monday.

&&

.near term /through friday/...
surface analysis shows low pressure near toledo this morning with an
upper level trough deepening over lower michigan. a dry-slot aloft
will fill in with moisture as energy rounds the base of the trough
this morning. the surface low will deepen as it slides northeast
ahead of the trough, wrapping a cold front in from the west through
the afternoon. temperatures will start off near the high for today
in nw ohio while eastern areas may see as much as a 5 to 8 degree
rise before the front moves through. warming will be greatest in
areas near the lakeshore that benefit from downsloping flow.
coverage of showers will be lower this morning before the
combination of daytime heating and forcing from the cold front
and approaching cold pool aloft result in an expansion of
showers this afternoon. coverage of thunderstorms will be best
in the east ahead of the front where we see a little better
surface heating. freezing levels will be at or below 8000 feet
this afternoon with a -20c cold pool wrapping in at 500mb.
thunderstorms today will be capable of producing small hail and
brief heavy rain. by later this afternoon, rain will fill in
across northwest ohio with favorable deformation on the back
side of the trough. northwest winds gusting to 25-30 mph with
falling temperatures and rain will make conditions feel more
like fall then summer by this this evening. will carry nearly
100 percent pops for late this afternoon into this evening as
this area of rain moves east. some lake enhancement even
possible as 850mb temperatures fall to 5c. most area will see
additional qpf of 0.50 to 1.00 through tonight with locally
higher amounts. in addition, strong winds on lake erie with
already high water levels may lead to an increased threat of
erosion or possibly even lakeshore flooding along the lakeshore,
generally east of cleveland.

a ridge builds in quickly overnight and models show clouds clearing
from west to east. temperatures will fall into the 40s for much
of the area except for downwind of lake erie where the lake
will keep temperatures warmer. friday will be dry with
southwesterly flow developing during the afternoon. another day
of below normal temperatures with highs ranging from the upper
60s east to low 70s west.

&&

.short term /friday night through sunday night/...
friday night into early saturday may be the only dry period of the
short term as high pressure ridges into the area from the south. a
cold front will settle southward across the central great lakes on
saturday as low pressure moves eastward across ontario. there will
be a couple ripples of low pressure move along this boundary
saturday afternoon and again on sunday. the frontal boundary will be
located somewhere over northern oh into western pa. its exact
location is uncertain with a heavier swath of rain likely near and
just north of it. the threat of training showers/thunderstorms will
exist as we tap into the high precipitable water levels across the
area(1.7+ inches, approximately 150 % of normal). an additional 1.5
inches or more of rainfall will be possible into sunday night. if
you live in a poor drainage area or along a creek or stream there
could be flooding.

temperatures through the short term will be near to slightly under
seasonal averages.

&&

.long term /monday through wednesday/...
models keep a frontal boundary over the region through monday night
with one last ripple of low pressure moving along it at some point
on monday. high pressure will attempt to take control of the region
on tuesday but confidence in this is low with the ecmwf keeping at
least scattered showers/thunderstorms in the forecast into tuesday
night. so expect the wet pattern to continue with troughiness
persisting over the great lakes region.

temperatures through the long term will remain near or slightly
below seasonal averages.

&&

.aviation /12z thursday through monday/...
scattered showers will continue to fill in across the area this
morning. spotty mvfr ceilings are in place to start the taf
cycle but expect an expansion with diurnal heating this morning.
showers will become more widespread this afternoon ahead of an
approaching cold front. isolated thunderstorms are possible at
all terminals this afternoon with best chances at cak/yng. occasional
ifr visibilities can be expected with heavier showers or
thunderstorms.

southwest/west winds will be breezy ahead of the front, shifting
to northwest behind the front later this afternoon and evening.

outlook...non-vfr thursday night and again on saturday/sunday.

&&

.marine...
low pressure will deepen over the central great lakes this afternoon
into the evening. so expect southwest winds ahead of it to increase
through the day. however as the low passes and a cold front crosses
the lake a west to northwest wind will increase to at least 15 to 25
knots. there is a period from 03z tonight through 12z friday where
winds may top out around 30s knots, especially across the central
and eastern half of the lake. there is concern that significant
erosion could occur from willowick to ripley, so if there are any
impacts please report it to us. will also need to monitor the water
levels for the presque isle area with water levels approaching 75
inches above low water datum.

winds will decrease on friday but the lull will only be brief as
southwest winds increase ahead of a cold front on saturday. small
craft advisories will likely be needed. the frontal boundary will
then sag south of the lake and become stationary for sunday into
monday.

From the top HN comment:

... we're now living in a web where Google does whatever it wants, adds whatever it wants to Chrome, and the web is at its mercy.

There's not really much of a difference between the web today and the "Best viewed in IE" web, and that's sad. There's a difference in developer goodwill, and of course things aren't as buggy as they were back then so it overall doesn't feel like you're "stuck" with Chrome like it did with IE, but... you are. You're just OK with it.

top hn comment:

For the most part, I'm now Google free. I don't despise Google as a company but I believe that their core business model is incompatible with privacy.

I like that closing line. It's something I can relate with. I appreciate Google's products, use a Pixel 3 which is a sin I probably shouldn't admit on HN, and I'd love to use their whole ecosystem - Google suite, the Chromebook, Google Home etc - for all my tech needs. The issue is, Google in my eyes is a data analytics company first and foremost. No matter how much I like the design and functionality of their products, if I want to maintain even a small semblance of privacy I can't in good faith support them.

Only problem I have now is that their phone is too damn good to ditch...

WeChat is Watching: Living in China with the app that knows everything about me (nautil.us)

I would highly recommend following @0xDUDE on twitter, he always posts surveillance leaks in China. He found out that WeChat conversations are sent to the local police depending where the user is, and there are employee farms manually reading the conversations... The same way factory workers in China are paid 2 dollars a day, employee farms for conversation/data reading are doing the same...

Apollo raises $22M to simplify app development (apollographql.com)

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20164531

As a user of GraphQL with Apollo since a year, I still don’t see how it simplifies app development. Actually, having such a huge dependency in the code feels more like a liability.

Most apps are simple, don’t need to send much data around if you don’t put 3-10 user tracker in, and Rest is just really, really simple for most parts.

In every project I worked so far that used GraphQL, developers tend to not care about backwards compatibility of APIs because having tons of optional properties in query responses doesn’t feel nice.

As always, there are exceptions and if it makes sense, sure, go ahead. But be aware of the dependencies and the magic you get into your project. Oh, and don’t use it for file upload, that’s just painful.
