Dinner time notes:

Soggy day, although the rain ended in the late afternoon.

We left home at 9:35 a.m. with the rain pouring down. We went downtown to the farmers market. Tough drive due to the rain, ponding of water in spots, and low visibility.

Cold. The farmers market lowered the walls on the year-round section. We made typical purchases: perogies, honey, BBQ sauce, bread, greens, small cinnamon pecan cake, small cup of coffee, vegan pasta, sweet treats for Gabbie, and a few other things.

After the farmers market, we filled up our medium-sized jug with more kombucha from Boochy Mama's, also located downtown. They have neat little place for production and selling their delicious kombucha. Deb makes kombucha too, and she bottled a batch on Friday, and she has another batch fermenting. Kombucha is probably my second favorite beverage after water.

From Boochy Mama's, we drove to near Blissfield to meet a realtor who showed us around the inside of an old two-story, brick farmhouse, built around 1880. The lot contained three acres. I liked it. The lot seemed huge to me, considering that we live in the city on a tiny lot. I imagined planting a lot of native prairie type plants on the lot, along with maintaining a large produce garden, and planting fruit-bearing trees and shrubs. If we got adventurous, we could use most of the land for an alpaca or sheep farm.

I liked the inside of the house. It does not have air conditioning, and it only has one bathroom. For some reason, those are negatives for many people, but not me. I grew up with only one bathroom and no AC. We still don't have central AC. On warm summers, I install two small window AC units, one in the dining room, and one in the living room. None upstairs in our bedroom. I don't mind sleeping when the room temp is 85 to 90 degrees, as long as a window fan blows on me.

The farmhouse is located in big-time, wide open farm country. It's amazing how big sky the area was. It's nearly possible to see horizon to horizon. The sun would be seen early in the summer. At our heavily shaded West Toledo home, the sun is visible after 9:00 a.m. in the summer. It makes for shady walks on summer mornings.

But in that wide open farm country, a lot more wind exists. The farmhouse contained a lot of windows. I imagined a lot of summer breezes blowing through the house.

It would be a different way of living. It's amazing how large three acres seemed. I would have fun playing with the land.

It was about a 35-minute drive from downtown Toledo to the farmhouse. Currently, it's a 10- to 12-minute drive from our West Toledo home to downtown Toledo.

On the drive home from the farmhouse visit, we stopped at this old-looking general store in Berkey. I think that the store was called the Red and White Store. We bought handmade booties for Dominic that a local person crocheted. We also bought something to drink. It was about the only business in Berkey.

We stopped at our house for a bit, unloaded the car with our farmers market purchases, and let Barney outside and gave him a treat. Then we took off with our birdwatching gear. I bundled up extra warm, more like winter. I should have added my winter wool coat as a layer.

We drove to Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge because the Common Loon seen at that location yesterday was reported this morning. It has been several years since I have seen a Common Loon. This was the only reason to go out birdwatching today. We had not planned to do this because of the weather. We planned to go birdwatching tomorrow.

We saw the loon, watched it for more than 30 minutes, standing outside in the cold, wet weather. Afterwards, instead of driving home, we drove around to several other areas, looking at birds, mainly ducks.

We arrived home around 5:30 p.m. and relaxed the rest of the evening. For part of our dinner, Deb baked perogies that we already had in the freezer.

Morning notes:

I heard a White-throated Sparrow sing this morning around our home. It's one of the best songsters. I saw two WTSP yesterday, foraging on our backyard.

Today is more like a slightly above normal winter day. Occasionally, we have warmer days in January than today.

More rain moved in overnight. This morning is dark with a heavy overcast, rainy, breezy, and cold. It's about as ugly a weather that one could experience. If outside, it would be nicer if it was 20 degrees and snowing.

Based upon the position of the low pressure and the counterclockwise flow around a low, the big rain band of moderate rain is moving east to west.

Today's weather will be hard for the Tree Swallows, the Barn Swallows, and the Purple Martins. The Tree Swallows are hardier though.

Rain is coming down pretty good now, and it will continue this way for a long while, according to radar.

Weather improves dramatically tomorrow. Man it's dark out for 9:23 a.m.
