9:52 a.m.

Now a White-throated Sparrow is foraging on our backyard. It's the brilliant-looking white morph. It's obvious at 60-plus feet away without binoculars.

Fox, Tree, Song, White-throated, and the Slate-colored Junco. The sparrow family birds, seen in our backyard this morning.

One sparrow that I would expect to see now in our backyard, during the spring migration is the Chipping Sparrow. I have not heard any around our home yet.

9:28 a.m.

A couple minutes ago, I saw the American Tree Sparrow forage on our backyard, and I saw a Song Sparrow forage on the ground near the west side of our garage. The birds would be eating the millet that I scatter on the ground.

The Song Sparrow is also an unusual sighting for our yard, which has always baffled me, since it's a common sparrow. It seems that we should see a few during the spring migration each year, but we don't. We are more likely to see Fox Sparrows in our yard than Song Sparrows.

About every summer, a Song Sparrow sings/nests along the Tiff Ditch stream by Elmhurst Elementary, which located only two or three blocks from our house.

And so far this spring, a Song Sparrow has established residence along the Tiff Ditch stream, near Woodmont Ave, east of our house by a block. I heard it sing yesterday morning. I first heard it sing at that location a few weeks ago. Hopefully, it attracts a mate and spends the summer.

One of the juncos that I saw a few minutes ago was a male. As April wears on, most of the juncos will be females. I still hear juncos singing around our home, at least yesterday morning I did.

8:25 a.m.

Cloudy morning. Low clouds. Area temps were in the mid-40s.

Yesterday's weather was sunny with high cloudiness and warm with temps reaching at least the upper 60s in the afternoon. Winds were light from the east. I'm guessing that a stiff onshore breeze formed along the lakeshore by early afternoon, cooling off the shoreline area.

Yesterday morning, I heard an Eastern Towhee and a White-throated Sparrow sing from our backyard. While exercise walking early yesterday morning, I heard a Golden-crowned Kinglet call.

Our backyard junco numbers have decreased noticeably yesterday morning and this morning. I'm guessing that many of the juncos that were around on Thursday and Friday migrated on Friday night.

Shortly after 8:00 a.m. today, I only saw three juncos in our backyard. I also saw a Fox Sparrow, scratching the surface for food. And while scanning the yard with my binoculars, I spotted an American Tree Sparrow, foraging at the base of our brush pile.

The tree sparrow was a surprise sighting for our yard. Tree sparrows are common along the lakeshore in the winter. We saw a lot of tree sparrows last Sunday.

About now, the first week or so of April is when I usually see the last tree sparrows along the lakeshore. They start migrating early because they nest far north. Their first migration movements in northwest Ohio can begin in early February.

I rarely see a tree sparrow in our yard. I have recorded only a handful of tree sparrow backyard sightings, and they all occurred in the winter.

Tree sparrows like to group together, which means it's strange to see only one, but that's how it has been for previous yard sightings over the years.
